Predictions for chapter 66?

What do you think will happen next month?

Historia will... something.

I'm really curious to see how that's going to go.

Results of the Anti-Ship Wall

http://fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org/121982.html?thread=626119038#cmt626119038

The general trend is Levi/Eren, Jean/Marco, Eren/Mikasa, Jean/Mikasa, Eren ships in general, Levi ships in general and Annie ships in general. Interesting.

Re: Results of the Anti-Ship Wall

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I find the unpopularity of Jean/Marco surprising or not. On the one hand, it's supposed to be the second biggest ship in SNK. On the other, that probably means that a lot of people are annoyed by it popping up everywhere, and some of those people are on FFA (not the typical tumblr fandom sample).

Ackerman power theories

(Anonymous) 2015-02-02 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think the Ackermans got their abilities specifically to protect the royal line, or was it the other way around - they came to be at the king's right hand because they were so strong? Do their abilities require a specific "trigger"?

Re: Ackerman power theories

(Anonymous) 2015-02-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I think they had it all along and that's how they got their position. Canon seems to imply that it's genetics/tied to a specific race.

As for the trigger thing, I would assume that everyone in the Ackerman clan needs it, since all the strong members (Mikasa, Levi and Kenny) explicitly had an awakening. Mikasa's dad on the other hand, seemed pretty weak, which would imply that he never awakened his power. But I guess that doesn't necessarily completely kill the idea that some Ackermans could wield this power all along.

Re: Ackerman power theories

(Anonymous) 2015-02-02 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
From the last chapter I got the idea they were allowed in the Walls for the specific reason of protecting the royal bloodline, but they might have existed indipendently as amazing fighters before. Like, they might have been created as a weapon against Titans before humans gave up on saving them, for example.

My impression is that yeah, their power does require a specific external "trigger". Powers work like this a lot in the SNK world - Titan-shifting requires a "trigger" in the form of pain, for example, and the memory removal/recovery system is "triggered" by external physical touch, too. The Ackerman power seems to require just one "trigger" once and for all that is then permanently on "on", but it's the same principle, I think.

An idea I got into my head, I don't know much based on canon and how much on me being weird, is that the person that "triggers" the "trigger" (look at my wordage being so amazing) becomes the specific object of protection for that specific Ackerman.

Like, Eren "triggered" Mikasa and Mikasa became extremely protective of him. My theory is that that brother of Reiss' whom Kenny is so protective of even after his death? That was "his" Eren, the guy who triggered him into becoming the superhammy sociopath we all know and love.

But I can't begin to guess who "triggered" Levi. I don't follow ACWNR but I think it wasn't touched upon in there? And while the shipper in me wants to say Erwin, Levi seemed to have been pretty damn strong even before meeting him, so the "trigger" must have been somebody else (unless adult Ackermans are able to use their power to an extent even before the triggering).

(Maybe the reason why he always looks like somebody kicked all of his puppies is because his "trigger" is dead?)

It would be kind of an amazing coincidence of coincidences if Eren just so happened to belong to the same bloodline that the Ackermans were to protect anyway, but a lot of signs point to yes. That could mean that the "triggering" ability is specifically tied to the royal line, which would make the question of who "triggered" Levi very very curious, but we'll see. This is just an epileptic tree, who know what's really going on in this comic anymore.

And now that the word "trigger" has lost all meaning I'm going to close this thing off.

Chapter 66 Spoilers

I've read the extremely rough translation here....
http://reiner--braun.tumblr.com/post/110167583204/shingeki-no-kyojin-66-text-translation

and the raws here .....
http://raw.senmanga.com/Shingeki_no_Kyojin/66/1

and, wow, this chapter. I am so damn impressed with Historia. I am relieved that Mikasa came to her aid, rather than tried to kill her. I'm relieved that Eren's finally out of his chains — I mean, we all love Eren in bondage, but the poor kid could use a break from it. I'm amused at Jean calling him a "half-naked bastard" — didn't you boys all see each other naked a thousand times in training? (I bet that's gonna be the impetus for several dozen fics in which Jean gets a boner from seeing Eren chained up and shirtless and then tries to convince himself he's not gay.)

And I'm absolutely thrilled by Levi expressing compassion for Eren and, once again, leaving the choice up to him. People who still claim this ship is "abusive" really should move past the courtroom scene: even the anime has left it behind, but in the manga it's literally been years.

This is probably a wanky thing to say, but one could argue that Historia punching Eren in the head and telling him to snap out of it is an echo of Levi grabbing her by the collar and telling her to snap out of it. I'd be the first to admit that there are other explanations: Ymir's "tough love" inspiring Historia to pass that along to Eren, and Historia, as she herself says, simply being furious to hear Eren deprecating himself. And that Levi roughing her up wasn't the best way he could've handled that situation. But the idea that what he did in ch. 56 might have been at least something of a factor in Historia's actions ten chapters later... amuses me. :P

A sadder thought. This is the two-thirds mark of the manga. The last time Levi did that for Eren was the one-third mark, which is made very clear by Eren's flashback to the Forest of Giant Trees. I wonder if Isayama will make it a third time at the very end of the story... and Eren's choice will be, as many of us have suspected, whether or not to sacrifice his own life for others?

SNK character you can't bring yourself to like

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
...and why.

Re: SNK character you can't bring yourself to like

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
For the longest time, Levi, but that's changing lately. Honestly I think it's because my first contact with him was through the hype in fandom even before I saw his first proper appearance in the anime, so I was primed to him being this superhuge sex bomb and he just wasn't? I mean, he's not the kind of character I find sexy. And I don't ship him with Eren, so seeing ereri pop up everywhere was kind of annoying.

Nowadays I have to say he's grown on me, mostly because I've realized most of the stuff I disliked about him has been made up somehow by the fandom.

I have to say, Pixis. I was willing to like him a lot and he seemed like fun, but in between knowing that he was inspired by a very controversial Japanese general and a lot of his attitude especially in the Trost arc, I think I won't be too torn if he gets his wish of a hot female Titan eating him.

But honestly this is a fandom in which it's very hard for me to find a character I truly honestly dislike, you know? They're all interesting.

How the kids see Levi

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Reposting this from FFA, in case some of the regulars here don't visit that place:
http://fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org/125526.html?thread=647841110#cmt647841110

Eren: Still admires and trusts Levi a lot, with the most recent chapter proving it further. Plus, when he's waking up from unconsciousness, he thinks of Armin and Levi first. He did look really shocked by how Levi was treating Historia in 56, like he couldn't believe that Levi would do something like this, but it remains to be seen if this had a permanent negative effect on how he sees his captain. Eren seems overall pretty eager to please him (like the cleaning in 51) or maybe he just really fears Levi's wrath. On the other hand, he seemed pretty happy at the prospect of Hsitoria punching Levi in 56, so I figure he derives some enjoyment from imagining someone handing Levi's ass to him. I guess that might indicate that Eren does feel some resentment at how much he is intimidated by Levi and would find it cathartic to see him brought low for once.

Mikasa: Used to hate Levi and be really hostile towards him. Ever since he hurt his leg trying protecting her, she's started to gradually trust and respect him. It's probably also a relief for her that there's someone so strong that he can be her partner in battle instead of another person she needs to protect.
Occasionally, his actions still piss her off (she looked livid when he manhandled Historia) but she seems to also have grown resigned to his bad behavior to some extent. (She looked exasperated when Levi said in 59 that Armin stained his hands, but then stopped protesting when she saw that he was actually trying to make Armin feel better.)

Armin: This one is tricky, but I get the vibe that Armin is kind of guarded/wary around him. He generally only speaks about plans and stuff with him, and the wariness is something I base mainly on how he reacted when Levi manhandled Historia - he helped her stand up after Levi dropped her without his eyes ever leaving Levi, as if he was braced for him to do another brutal thing. At the same time, he didn't speak out against Levi like some of the others did. He seems to agree with Levi's ruthlessness to a large extent, but I don't get this silent understanding/in perfect synch with each other-vibe that the Mikasa/Levi relationship gives off at times.

Jean: Early on (51), it seemed liked Jean sort of liked Levi in the sense that he seemed to enjoy the thought of the others getting in trouble and being chewed out by him - Jean did keep threatening Sasha with Levi in 51. Jean himself didn't seem too afraid of him given how lax he got about the whole cleaning deal even if he did have an "oh crap"-expression in 52 when Levi discovered some of his shoddy work.
Of course, the Historia incident made Jean dislike Levi greatly, only to turn into a guilty sort of meekness in 59. After Levi told him that his way of doing things wasn't necessarily wrong, Jean regained some of his stubbornness in regards to Levi (that "please let me do it"-staredown before Levi allows Jean to handle Marlowe and Hitch). Jean seems to no longer believe that Levi acts the way he does out of maliciousness/cruelty, but he also still isn't all that comfortable with Levi's torturing etc. either. (See 60 for an example.) Jean kind of grits his teeth and bears it now, though.

Connie+Sasha: I grouped them together, since we don't see their opinions that individually and in-depth. They both hate how he treated Historia and obviously are also freaked out by him torturing and/or killing people. Considering that they sort of seem to follow Jean (they only voice their disapproval of Levi's methods once Jean brings it up first in 57), it comes across as them being less confident at opposing Levi without any back up. Sasha helping Historia to stand up in 56 and her previous relationship with Historia before she withdrew and became depressed most likely makes this much more personal for her, too. Plus, Sasha definitely sees Levi as two-faced, power-hungry and manipulative. Quote from the official crunchyroll translation:

Connie: "Captain Levi thinks he can use violence to make people do as he says. Just like what he did to Historia!"
Sasha: "Yet he acted so humble to Reeves Company! Threatening Historia when she was practically a husk of her usual self... He probably did that to make her easier to control once she becomes queen!"

Historia: Well, she was obviously scared shitless of Levi in 56 and towards the end of the chapter, Eren sees enough reluctance or resentment in her that he tells her to punch Levi to get back at him. Beyond that we know very little of how she feel about him because she has been depressed and listless for most of this arc.

Predictions for chapter 67?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Rod has a hot date with the roof of the cave, Eren is going through that special time when his body experiences a lot of unexpected changes, and Erwin is riding to meet this clusterfuck. Meanwhile, Hanji and Armin... something, and Kenny and his squad are also around.

How do nonnies expect this Rod vs Eren thing to go down, and how do you think the other pieces of the picture will fit into it?

Re: Predictions for chapter 67?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eren is going through that special time when his body experiences a lot of unexpected changes

You know, using Titan shifting as an extended metaphor for Eren facing the wild hormonal ride of teenagerhood could kind of fit. First time he Titans out it's an accident, he can't really control it, can't get his Titan on when he needs to, and then goes Titan at inappropriate moments, it almost invariably involves getting his clothes off, and of course there was a whole chapter dedicated to how he can't get hard.

...I'm sorry, I spend too much time on the kink meme. On to the real post.

I'm terrible at guessing what will happen with this manga. I'd be happy if Eren does manage to turn into some hotter version of the Armoured Titan, thought, because that would be badass and also because the long joyride of misery and pain that were the last few chapters for him could end on the positive note of him finally learning how to get hard. So to speak.

Jokes aside: learning how to make the crystal = shimmer of hope of reclaiming Wall Maria (thought the way to go is still long) = shimmer of hope of the situation eventually looking up at a point. I mean, I don't really expect things to go smoothly, but Eren has been thrashed through the gutter for the last few chapters, it's time for his hope spot now. Please.

I want Eren to wipe the floor with Rod and I think this possibility exists. Rod might be better at controlling the Titan power, but this is Eren we're talking about. He fought toe to toe with Annie and Reiner in Titan form. Plus it would be a thing that brings me great joy in my heart. But again, I'm terrible at guessing where the author is going.

Chapter 67 is out!

It's mangapanda, so the cleaning job is very sloppy and the translations by this group usually have some errors but if someone can't wait for the mangastream or crunchyroll version...

Part of me was like, "goddammit, seriously?" as I was reading - I mean, offscreen hardened Eren? super-exposition girl Historia? no fucking action, again? - but the end sets up a action scene more potentially exciting to me than any titan/titan fight could be, so, I guess I'm okay with it? Cautiously optimistic?

Something I am totally unapologetically enthusiastic about, though: Historia in gear harness and standing up to Levi. <3 <3 Yessss. Ymir would be so happy and turned on.

Official translation for 67

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
What's with the "rattle, rattle"? Is that the wagon? Did it take some damage in Trost?

"Their ruinous ideas for peace" works a lot better than "that destructive pacifist." Also, "It looks like things have gotten a little easier for us" > "It got a bit better." (Of course, that last one also could lead us into a false sense of security...)

Page 28: "But now I have to say goodbye..." Quite honestly, with that plus "I'm here to settle my own fate," now I'm dreading what exactly Historia is planning to do. I think she's going to martyr herself.

"You tiny old man!" That's even better than "You midget." And is it just me, or is Levi smiling?

Bottom of page 34: "It's headed to this town..." But will it help you party down?

Top of page 36 - from right to left, excluding the two guys in the remote back, the Garrison officers look a lot like Ian, Nile, Gelgar, and Son of Shadis. (The last guy doesn't look like anyone I've seen so far.)

So instead of "The best team in the Survey Corps," Erwin says, “We will have to make full use of the power of the Survey Corps’ soldiers.” Eren turns his head away not because he's still feeling crushed, but because he has no idea what his "full power" now entails. He can harden, but he can't figure out how to use the coordinate again.

Re: Official translation for 67

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, Eren is still coming across as pretty crushed to me! But yeah, that's a pretty big translation difference. Not being called the best team in the SC anymore, aww.

I also noticed Levi smiling! It's funny, in the darker mangapanda version he looked grumpy, but here he's amused...

Historia will be fine, though, I think. She had that big "you're not killing me!11!" moment, so I doubt she'd go and martyr herself as such.

Eren and Armin fighting

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Isayama revealed in his most recent Q&A that he'd like to write about Eren and Armin having a fight:
http://dumbfandomrambling.tumblr.com/post/112863158584/anons-translations-of-this-months-q-a-q-did

There's been talk about it before, this post is a good source: http://leviskinnyjeans.tumblr.com/post/113346729358/do-you-think-isayama-is-withholding-some-aspect-of

So what do people here think? Will it be a big serious fight? What will it be about?

Re: Eren and Armin fighting

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
The leviskinnyjeans post was actually a relief to me. Armin's my favorite character, and I've been worried that he'll grow much darker than Eren can tolerate. Because I believe Eren will ultimately sacrifice himself at the end, Armin would then be doubly heartbroken -- that Eren is dead, and that Armin alienated him before he died.

However, there's nothing wrong with friends having a passionate, even angry argument over thorny ethical issues. I am hoping it will remain vocal only, rather than escalate to physical, because there would be the potential for Eren to become reminiscent of the bullies he used to pull off Armin. (Armin is hardly frail but he's still not as strong as Eren.) I think that kind of scenario would be painful for both of them, and also for Mikasa if she ends up restraining Eren.

"Fandom osmosis" for SnK

(Anonymous) 2015-03-26 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
People who aren't fans of the canon try to describe it.

http://fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org/129926.html?thread=674046854#cmt674046854

I am laughing so hard at "Humans genetically engineered a race of giant humans called Titans that have no buttholes which proceeded to wipe out humanity" that I am wheezing.

My fave is the one about SNK being about a highschooler named Eren who can't get hard.

Eren in chapters 66 & 67

After Kenny cuts that gash in his forehead, Eren looks like he's wearing a headband. Does anyone else see that? It's like he escaped from an '80s exercise video.

Spoilers: T-4 and counting!

Cover of the newest issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine

It was announced that the cover would feature the top three of the SNK character popularity poll. We don't know the rest yet, but the top three being Levi, Erwin and Eren is no big surprise. The Da Vinci Magazine poll last year already had the same result.

I'm surprised that Erwin made the cut. I'd have expected to see Mikasa in his place.

ACWNR 2 OVA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-08 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I can't find a sub yet, I skipped ahead to the ending of the unsubbed version and watched it, just to see how it's handled.

I don't want to start an IC vs. OCC war here, and I realize that anyone can cry under enough stress and grief. But... it just felt like overkill for Levi, how distraught he was. I don't recall him crying at all in the manga version. He was enraged and grieving, but not sobbing.

Also, the ending of the OVA is so much less shippy for Eruri. The rain should still be pouring down on them. Erwin should have yelled at Mike to back off and offered to let Levi kill him if he wanted, rather than letting Mike pull him away - and would Humanity's Second Strongest even be able to restrain Humanity's Strongest, especially with Levi in a murderous rage? And Erwin should be grabbing Levi and shouting at him, not being so calm like that. Levi staring in awe at Erwin riding off into the distance just didn't do it for me.

I may still watch the subbed version to see how the rest of the story's handled, but my expectations aren't high.

I absolutely agree... it's funny, I was scouring all over the internet to find a discussion like this until I thought 'I wonder if fandom is still on DW/LJ' and here I am :)

I was disappointed with the pacing of last quarter, to be honest... there wasn't enough time to linger on his shock, and that kind of screaming didn't seem to fit with his character. The typical anime trope of a 'strong character being broken by rage and then cutting down his enemies in elite fashion' really took away from the drama of the scene for me... I feel it would be so much more powerful if he finally realises the visceral, terrifying nature of the titans and what has always been 'other people's problems' finally become his problem. The kill should be a hot bloody mess, a hack and slash... I would have the camera lingering on his face and working body and the chunks of flesh rather than a snappy 'here are my moves' sequence'.
Yes, he kills in grief and rage but also for survival (I know that's not a theme in the original material but it's so much more effective in conveying despair, for an ostensibly strong character to struggle)

Also agree with your assessment of Erwin... they're still in a war zone, effectively, but he just saunters on down. He's a much stronger mentor if he has signs of being affected himself, out of breath and shouting, but STILL managing to keep rational and prevail, because that's the extent to which he bottles his emotions and prioritise leadership.

I don't think the sub will help us, anon. :) I'm glad I found your comment.

Chapter 68

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I just read it on Crunchyroll.

Spoiler text:
I feel kind of underwhelmed, and this is the first month I was nearly completely unspoiled for the chapter, because scanlations were nowhere to be found. Last chapter was better IMO, even if it wasn't the actionfest it had been anticipated to be.

The Shiganshina Trio bits were lovely, Eren is making a genuine attempt to control his emotions, Historia was impressive yet again, we got some tantalizing hints from her/Frieda's/Uri's memories, and I think Levi's earned a spanking from Erwin (not the good kind either). That said, Rod's destruction seemed far too easily accomplished. Like right after the coup succeeded and the SC were exonerated. I suspect we're about to see the Interior Squad again soon.

/end spoiler

Re: Chapter 68

I've spent so long defending Historia from people hating on her, I should be loving this, but idk, I'm not really enjoying the 'flawless badass goddess' as much as I feel I should. I'm finding myself hoping the memories were a sign of something sinister/interesting.

It was very easily done (if still better than the titan/titan slugfest I thought we were getting a couple of chapters back), and I'm wondering what's coming next. Is this just Isayama tying ends up pre basement!arc, or is there going to be some biteback from all this?
