Marco doesn't look anything like her. He had a very rectangular face, dark eyes, short hair, and a short and stubby nose. The soldier has an angular face, lighter eyes and long hair. I dislike it when people make anything and everything about Marco, when it comes to Jean, even though all evidence in canon the manga suggests he's long moved on. Besides that, making it because she looks like Marco just detracts from Jean's characterisation. His morals are against killing people, including complete strangers. Saying he hesitated because she looked like Marco sort of implies he would have shot her if she hadn't, which... isn't Jean, imo.
They're both the sound effects, from what I can see.
DA but yeah, I completely agree and I really wish people would drop the Marco thing in regards to Jean. From what we see he did care a great deal about him, but not to the point that his whole life revolved around Marco. This Marco-centric fandom!Jean is honestly pathetic and boring in my eyes and runs counter to how independent and strong-willed Jean has always been.
Plus, this Marco-obsessed portrayal of Jean honestly cheapens and devalues his relationship with all his other comrades. It seems like people frequently forget, for example, that losing Marco is what made Jean realize how much he loves the friends he has still left. I mean it's pretty explicit in the line "if I hadn't met you guys I would have gotten away without worrying who's next". http://www.batoto.net/read/_/89452/shingeki-no-kyojin_v4_ch18_by_gantz-waitingroom/27
diff-diff anon but I liked a post I read some time ago on Tumblr, that the friendship between Marco and Jean could have been less of the BFF kind and more of the "Marco was nice to everyone and liked Jean's confidence and saw his potential, but didn't consider him anything more than another friend" kind. Jean's huge shock at his death would be less of the OMG THE LOVE OF MY LIFE HOW WILL I GO ON kind and more of the "wow, he was the nicest guy ever and he died this colorless, pointless death, what the hell?" kind. I mean, I do ship Marco/Jean, but I also can totally see this other scenario.
There's this idea floating around that Jean had no friends outside of Marco, and...well...no? He fools around with Sasha and Connie like an old friend, he talks to Bertoldt in that one chapter in a way that implies at least some intimacy, and he cared about Eren&co. enough to try and make him see reason by arguing with him.
Same for Marco being friends only with Jean or considering Jean "more specialest" - Eren heaps praise on Marco in the manga and his death was obviously a huge blow for him, too, and I won't analyze the Annie situation but she surely didn't seem to have anything against him.
I think the 104th as a whole was much more close-knit than the fandom gives them credit for.
I read that but the datebook "Inside Kou" (I think that was it's name) debunks it. As far as I remember it states explicitly that Jean and Marco were close. Nevertheless I like that interpretation and find it interesting. It's a refreshing change from "Marco is Jean's perfect friend soulmate".
OMG, I've been so bothered by "Marco was Jean's only friend" stuff, too! Granted, I think I do sort of get where it comes from (other than wanting to make the Jeanmarco ship more "special"). Jean's relationship with Sasha and Connie is not that developed onscreen and Jean's been portrayed as being their emotional support at times but not so much the other way around (which can create some distance and inequality), but... Their banter indicates that they are pretty comfortable and close nevertheless and SC are probably the two friends with whom Jean hangs out with to have fun/get into shenanigans (or sometimes keep them in check).
And yeah, there was the Bertholdt thing with Bertl being even moved enough to tell both Connie and Jean that even if things had turned out like this he really saw them as friends. Not to mention the bit where Connie brought up that they had sworn to grow old together. Or things like Mikasa being stunned by Ymir's betrayal or hesitating to finish off Bert and Reiner the first time around.
Maybe the best way to compare the 104th is to say that they were a bit like family? They were stuck together for better or for worse for a while and shared a lot of stuff over the years. Some members were definitely closer than others, but I still wish that fandom would branch out more instead of only sticking to the "default" friendships and pairings.
Plus as you say, parts of Jeanmarco fandom elevating the ship to the most special friendship hurts Marco's character, too. Eren seemed to definitely like him and Armin had some sort of friendship with him too. As for Annie judging by how uncomfortable see was at the suggestion of having killed Marco, it's safe to say that if she did it she felt at least guilty. Which in turn indicates that she most likely didn't hate him.
With Jeanmarco, I always wonder why it's not more of a thing in fics that Marco is such a do-gooder/peacemaker that he constantly bites off more than he can chew or ends up stressing too much over other people's problems. Instead he mainly fusses over Jean with rare token good deeds to prove that he is "freckled jesus" (ugh).
